Penny hat-trick in routine win for Wolves

KEVIN Penny scored a hat-trick as Warrington Wolves eased to a 46-16 win over Hull.

A crowd of just over eight thousand turned up to the Halliwell Jones Stadium for what was effectively a dead rubber clash, with the Wolves’ hopes of reaching the play-offs ended by Wigan last time out.

Hull coach Lee Radford admitted afterwards that it was clear it was a match played by two teams with nothing left to play for.

Gary Wheeler and Joel Monaghan both scored a brace of tries, while Chris Sandow kicked five goals having returned from Australia in the week.

Warrington led 22-6 at the break, thanks to a Penny double, Wheeler’s first try and a score from Ben Currie, with Dean Hadley crossing for the visitors.

The routine nature of the game continued in the second half, Ryan Atkins adding himself to the score list alongside Penny, Monaghan and Wheeler.

For Hull, Mark Minichiello scored a brace of tries.

Warrington coach Tony Smith said: “All credit to the players for their attitudes, some players are staying and some moving on, but they all ripped in regardless and that’s important.”
