TRAFFIC is moving again on the M56 between Helsby and Daresbury following a tanker blaze on the hard shoulder earlier today (Monday).

The motorway was closed in both directions causing traffic chaos in the area for long periods.

The blaze involved a tanker containing propane on the Chester bound carriageway on the hard shoulder.

The motorway was closed in both directions for safety reasons, with at least five fire engines  involved in the operation.

A cordon of 1500 metres was set up and motorists were evacuated from their vehicles and moved to a safe distance.

Air traffic was also guided away from the area and the Liverpool to Runcorn railway line was closed.

People in the Helsby, Hapsford and Elton areas wert advised to stay indoors with doors and windows closed.

Police say no casualties have been reported as a result of the incident.
