Countdown to the Starlight Ladies Walk

THE countdown to the Starlight Ladies Walk has begun, with St Rocco’s Hospice encouraging people to dig deep to sponsor those taking part.

The midnight challenge takes place on Friday June 19, with every penny of sponsorship going towards hospice care.

Warrington Wolves star Ben Harrison will be helping hand out medals to those who finish, in what is the 10th anniversary of the event.

Beginning at Orford Jubilee Neighbourhood Hub and spanning a route of either 6.5 or 13 miles, the 1200 walkers will be led at the start line by nine ladies who have taken part each year since its inception.

Lauren Tilston, Events Fundraising manager at St. Rocco’s, said: “As a sponsored walk, the money raised through Starlight is absolutely vital in ensuring we can continue our care. We’re delighted that so many women have registered this year, with registration fees covering the cost of putting on the event.  This means every last pound and penny raised through sponsorship will ensure we can continue to care for our patients and their loved ones.”

Over £3.2m is needed each year to keep the Hospice doors open, with two thirds coming direct from Warrington communities. Registration fees for walkers cover the costs of running the event, with all sponsorship helping care for patients and their families.

During the last nine years £1.6m has been raised by the 13,400 ladies who have taken part in the Starlight Walk, who gain sponsorship for taking on the challenge. Many marshals, who all volunteer for the task, are also sponsored for sacrificing a night’s sleep.
