WARRINGTON Wolves suffered a second successive Super League defeat as they went down 29-10 at home to Huddersfield Giants.
The Wolves trailed 7-0 at the break after a tight first half, and despite rallying to reduce arrears to 13-10 shortly after the hour mark, the Giants pulled away to condemn Tony Smith’s men to their first home league defeat of the season.
Huddersfield took the lead inside six minutes, when Jamie Ellis collected his own grubber kick to touch down under the posts, with Danny Brough adding the extras.
On the edge of half time, Brough added over a drop goal to put the visitors two scores in front, in a similar fashion to how he notched over a one pointer in the first half of the same fixture last season. On that day, a second drop goal was needed to pinch a 24-all draw for Huddersfield back in August, but they weren’t to need a second intervention this time.
Aaron Murphy’s try three minutes in to the second half, plus Brough’s conversion, made it 13-0 before Warrington finally got on the board through Gareth O’Brien.
Kevin Penny went in for an unconverted try shortly after the hour, as the Wolves threatened to turn things round, but it wasn’t to be.
Murphy’s second gave Huddersfield a bit of breathing space, and a blistering score by Jermaine McGillvary stretched the advantage to 23-10 with eight minutes to play.
And big prop Eorl Crabtree put the icing on the cake in the dying seconds, crashing over from close range, with Brough again adding the extras to cap a Giants win.
