LADIES from the Warrington Speak-Up Project enjoyed a pamper session from Beauty Therapy students at the Academy, Warrington Collegiate.
The Speak-Up group supports people in the town who face discrimination, disadvantage and social isolation and were treated to nail treatment tips as well as having their nails painted in a colour of their choice.
Julia Stokes, Lecturer in Beauty Therapy at Warrington Collegiate said: “The ladies were really enthusiastic and clearly enjoyed themselves. The students always enjoy working with clients, it gives them both valuable practical experience and confidence, both essential employability skills they will need for their careers in this competitive industry.”
Pip Horne, Project Co-ordinator Warrington Speak-Up Project, has created the “Ladies Group” as a spin off from the popular Tuesday morning Advocacy in Action group, working with individuals to ensure that they have a strong voice, have their rights respected and experience choice over their lives to create real change.
Pip said: “We began regular meetings following a very successful session which ran to promote breast screening for ladies with a learning difficulty. By popular demand the group now meet monthly to discuss women’s issues, have fun and enjoy themselves, all of which helps to boost their confidence.
“Warrington Speak Up is an advocacy organisation and as such is always looking for opportunities to encourage individuals to speak up. Experiences such as this encourage the ladies to feel valued and part of their local community which is something we are very keen to develop. Sessions such as todays pamper session provide first-hand experience for the students to work with the ladies which is the most powerful way to break down barriers and build positive attitudes as well as giving the ladies a real treat
“The ladies really appreciated the treat and will be smiling for days to come. It’s particularly enjoyable to work in partnership with Warrington Collegiate and the Beauty Therapy students.”
