SUPER sub Ben Wharton helped secure all three points for top of the table Warrington Town, with a last gasp smash and grab 1-0 victory over Burscough.
The victory saw Warrington go three points clear at the top of the Evo-Stik Division One North as they extended their unbeaten league run to 14 games.
With young keeper Josh Cook (pictured right) collecting the man-of-match award following a couple of impressive saves, the visitors will have felt disappointed to have left without at least a draw.
Warrington started the brighter of the two teams as Scott Metcalfe saw an early effort ruled out for off-side after just six minutes.
But it was Burscough who started to create the better of the chances, with former Wire striker Mark Beesley having the best chance on 17 minutes when his long range shot was saved well by Cook.
Just before the break Warrington thought they have scored when Jay McCarten’s header from a corner was cleared off the line.
Warrington rang the changes at half time bringing on Wharton and Gahgan for Bowen and Dawson but chances were few and far between, with the visitors always looking capable of sneaking one.
But with the clock ticking down a rare defensive error cost Burscough as Wharton was fastest to react as he raced clear and kept his cool to fire home to the delight of the Warrington fans behind the goal.
