WARRINGTON Town went top of the Evo-Stik Division One North for the first time with a hard earned 2-1 victory at Salford City.
Warrington started well as Scott Metcalfe saw his shot pushed wide by the keeper after just three minutes.
Although they were having the best of the chances Warrington didn’t convert them into goals.
But on 24 minutes a great pass from Peter Dogan opened up the Salford defence allowing Liam Dawson (pictured right) to fire home from the edge of the box for a deserved lead.
Then on 32 minutes a Chris Gahgan effort was somehow headed off the Salford line when a goal looked certain.
Just before the break Salford equalised when the defence failed to clear, allowing Aaron Walters to poke the ball home making it 1-1.
Just before the break new signing Carlos Meakin rattled the underside of the bar with a great effort as the sides went in level at the break.
Manager Shaun Reid rang the changes at the interval bringing on Jon Newby for Dawson.
The substitution paid dividends as Newby slotted over a pin point cross to the back post for Gaghan (top) to head home with ease, to give Warrington the lead.
Gahgan almost added a second on the hour when his shot was pushed around the post by the Salford keeper.
It was Warrington’s last real chance as the hosts pushed for an equaliser setting up a nerbvy final 15 minutes.
But Town held on for three valuable points which took them top of the table.
Next up is the visit of Cammell Laird to the HG Driver Recruitment Stadium this coming Tuesday kick off 7.45pm.
