Energy training academy opens

WARRINGTON’S biggest landlord has opened a renewable energy training academy which will aim to ensure the organisation becomes a leader in energy efficiency.
Chairman Roy Smith, officially opened Golden Gates Housing Trust’s training academy at Eagle Park, Warrington.
The academy contains the latest in renewable technologies and has been developed in partnership with sustainable timber and building materials supplier, Jewson.
Having recently been awarded MCS accreditation, which allows the Trust’s in-house building maintenance team to install solar PV systems, the academy will provide staff and apprentices with an opportunity to gain hands on experience.
The academy includes a fully operational solar thermal system and a PV installation and will also be used for training by staff from other housing associations and local authorities.
Since its launch in 2010, GGHT has set itself a series of ambitious targets around renewable energy as it aims to help its tenants deal with rising fuel prices and reductions in their income as a result of the Government’s Welfare Reforms.
This has seen them install renewable technology in 924 homes across Warrington, making up 11 per cent of their overall housing stock. The Trust’s in-house building maintenance team has currently installed 130 solar PV systems and the academy will help this number continue to increase.
Mr Smith said: “I am delighted to have been able to open our new renewable energy training academy.
As an organisation we are committed to investing in renewable technologies and helping our customers
to escape fuel poverty and improve the quality of their lives.
“The academy will enable us to continue to build our expertise across a range of technologies and will help us to achieve our aim of having renewable technology installed in 15 per cent of our homes by 2014.”
