ARTS Council funding has been awarded to this year’s Warrington Contemporary Arts Festival.
The funding has been awarded to Culture Warrington through the National Lottery “Grants for the Arts” scheme.
Funding for the autumn festival has been matched by Warrington Borough council through the Innovation Fund and comes as one of Culture Warrington’s venues – the Pyramid Arts Centre – has been shortlisted for a National Lottery Award.
Pyramid is the only project in the North to make it through to the finals in the “Best Arts Project” category at the National Lottery Awards.
The centre fought off strong competition from 900 other good causes to make it through to the final seven and is asking for support during the last week of public voting which closes on Wednesday, July 24.
This year’s festival is based around the theme “Be Curious” and with the additional funding promises to be bigger than ever. It will bring a selection of nationally recognised artists to Warrington attracting an audience from across the North West and beyond through the festival partnership between Culture Warrington and The Gallery At Bank Quay House.
Alongside local and regional artists, this year the programme includes one of Europe’s leading improvisation and masked theatre companies Kepow, who will come to Warrington following a successful tour of Canada, USA and Hong Kong.
In 2011 the festival brought more than 18,000 visitors to the town, increasing to 22,000 last year. This is expected to increase even more this year as the festival takes place during the Rugby League World Cup when two games will be played in Warrington and the town will host the Samoan team.
Janey Moran, senior arts development officer at Culture Warrington said:
“This funding will ensure the Contemporary Arts Festival grows even further and help us to secure even more internationally acclaimed artists. The Arts Council and National Lottery have previously supported Culture Warrington’s venues and events and we’re delighted to have been recognised in the National Lottery Awards”.
