Oar-some challenge to beat blood cancer

STAFF at a Warrington store are getting ready for an “Oar-some” challenge this Saturday (June 15) to raise money for blood cancer charity, Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research.
Together with their 350+ colleagues from Wickes DIY stores across the North West and other colleagues across the UK they are embarking on a sponsored “rowathon” to raise an impressive £100,000 from the challenge.
Each store will be rowing the distance from Dover to Calais, and back (52.6 miles) on a static rowing machine over the course of just 8 hours.
Wickes store in Warrington has been kindly loaned a rowing machine by LiveWire at Orford Park.
The dedicated colleagues will take 30 minutes to an hour each to help complete the distance and will be seeking sponsorship from friends, family and customers to raise money for the blood cancer charity which has been the DIY chain’s national charity partner since October 2006.
The partnership has so far raised over £3 million.
Stuart Holmes, Regional Charity Champion said “I am really looking forward to working with my colleagues to complete this challenge, it will be a tough one with a few sore arms and legs at the end but that will be nothing compared to what blood cancer patients and their families have to go through on a daily basis. Raising money for Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research means better treatments and cures for patients with blood cancer. This challenge will also be a great for the customers to see the colleagues doing something different and having a good time whilst raising money for a great cause. Come and join us – we need your words of encouragement!”
Cathy Gilman, Chief Executive of Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research, says: “Our partnership with Wickes continues to be a brilliant success and we are so grateful for all the fundraising they are doing for us. All the money raised will help us in our mission to beat blood cancer – stopping people from dying and making patients’ lives better. Good luck to Wickes North West with the event – it’s great that they are taking on this challenge.”
