YOUNG people in Warrington could soon benefit from a new centre of educational excellence through a University Technical College (UTC) in the town centre.
Potential students and their parents/guardians are being invited to register their interest in the college, which, if approved, would open in September 2015.
The proposed UTC is sponsored by the University of Chester, alongside industry partners including United Utilities and Sellafield Ltd, and supported by Warrington Borough Council.
UTCs are a new concept in education for 14-19 year olds which offer high quality, technically-orientated courses in an environment where young people are encouraged to follow their interests and to develop them into skills and qualifications.
The Warrington UTC would specialise in engineering and nuclear technology and be open to students from Warrington and across the region from Liverpool to Manchester.
Students would be offered clear progression routes into higher education, apprenticeships or full time employment. By working closely with local employers the UTC would offer opportunities to connect with local businesses on valuable work experience projects as part of their studies.
It is proposed to be based in a brand new facility in the town’s Stadium Quarter with excellent road and rail links for students travelling from the wider area. Students would be able to study in state-of-the-art laboratories using the latest equipment.
The proposed UTC would also boost the local Warrington economy by providing a source of important and valuable skills urgently needed in the North West.
The bid now needs the support of local residents registering their support and expressions of interest in order to be successful.
Professor Peter Harrop, Pro-Vice Chancellor and Provost for the University of Chester’s Warrington Campus, said: “We are proud to be sponsoring the bid for the Warrington UTC, which offers an exciting new type of education for young people in Warrington and the North West.
“The university has a campus in Warrington and will open a new engineering and technology campus near Ellesmere Port later this year making it well-placed to support the future of these skills in the region.”
Cllr Terry O’Neill, leader of Warrington Borough Council, said: “The UTC will be a huge asset for Warrington. It will equip young people with practical training and qualifications to pursue careers in engineering and in the nuclear industry and so help protect and grow the future of the town.”
