CHILDREN at Birchwood C of E Primary School are celebrating after winning 10 state-of-the-art laptops in a competition.
They convinced competition organisers, Appleton-based logistics and supply-chain specialist Flextronics, that they would make best use of the computers to beat off several other schools in the Warrington area to the prize.
ICT Coordinator Jan Meir demonstrated the children’s enthusiasm and growing confidence with computers to Flextronics’ General Manager Mike Meades, as a class of Year 3 and 4 children worked on a project to build their own Wiki information pages on different kinds of animals, using hyperlinks to add to their research.
Jan said: “Flextronics’ generosity has allowed us to make real progress in using computers across the curriculum and not just in ICT classes. Computer literacy is so important in today’s world and having extra laptops available is really helping them develop their ICT skills.”
Charmaine, 8, a pupil at the school, said: “IT is kind of fun because you can do loads of things on the computer. I’m learning about tigers and on the computer I can see what they look like, what they eat and where they live.”
Classmates Freddie, 7, and Tyler, 8, added: “We think IT’s probably the best lesson we have!”
Flextronics General Manager, Mike Meades, said: “It’s really interesting to see the difference the new laptops have made to the children – it’s the first time we’ve made this kind of donation and we’re already exploring other ways we can support the local community in the future.”
