New store will bring 100 jobs

PLANNING chiefs have given the green light for a major new development involving a supermarket, pub and drive-through coffee shop at Warrington.
The project – which will provide 100 jobs – involves the site of the former Fordton Leisure Centre, in Chiltern Road, Orford.
But it will front onto the A49 Winwick Road.
The development will consist of a 1,418 sq metre supermarket, a drive-through coffee shop of 172 sq metres, a family pub/restaurant of 1,017 sq metres and two retail units of 186 sq metres.
Fordton Leisure Centre, which was demolished following the opening of the new Orford Park Community Hub, was created in the 1980s by conversion of a former schools built around 1930.
Officers said the development conflicted with council policy that new retail developments should be in the town centre.
But the benefits of the scheme would outweigh this as the development was unlikely to have any impact on the viability of the town centre.
Objections were received from three nearby residents and one town centre-based company.
The new complex will be set back from Winwick Road, leaving a narrow strip of land to be landscaped and planted with trees.

  1. Why do the Council bother having a policy that states that any new retail investment should be in the town centre when they ignore the policy every time someone wants to open a store or develop some land outside the town centre? Surely just best to welcome any and all investment when and where it wants to be……
