THE Environment Agency is to host a two-day exhibition at Warrington’s Golden Square shopping centre to explain the massive £23 million flood risk management scheme currently under construction in the town.
Experts will be on hand at the shopping centre on Friday and Saturday (March 15-16) to answer questions and comment on the final phase of the work, which is still being designed.
The first phase is now nearing completion at Latchford and planning approval has been given for the second phase at Howley.
The third and final phase of the scheme will be constructed in Woolston, Padgate, Kingsway North, Cinnamon Brow and Latchford East and is scheduled for construction in the summer of next year for completion in spring 2015.
Environment Agency flood risk manager Mark Garratt said: “Over 2,000 homes and businesses are at risk of flooding from the River Mersey in Warrington and the construction of these flood defences will ensure that the town is resilient and can continue to prosper.
“We are keen to keep the local community informed about our plans and our exhibition at Golden Square shopping centre will feature a host of maps and artists impressions that will give people an idea of how the finished scheme will look.
“We are also hosting fortnightly surgeries at our site offices in Victoria Park where people can drop in to talk about the flood risk management scheme. They are held every second Friday between 1pm and 2.30pm. The next is scheduled to take place on Friday March 22.
“Warrington has been on the cusp of major flooding several times, and the weather we experienced in 2012 highlights how essential this scheme will be.”
