Residents' early spring clean-up

MORE than 60 bags of litter were collected from greenery in Warrington as community-minded volunteers carried out an early spring clean-up.
Residents from Westbrook joined forces with local borough and parish councillors, teams from environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, local stores and the Cheshire Probation Service, to tackle rubbish in the woods, brooks and hedgerows in the area.
The Clean Up My Communit group removed 65 bags of litter totalling more than 300kg and even found an abandoned canoe in a dried-up brook.
The 31-strong group was led by residents David Parr and George Oliver, who in the past two years have held 16 clean-up and Love Where You Live events in the west of the borough.
The clean-up team was provided with equipment and waste bags by Warrington Borough Council and Keep Britain Tidy’s Big Tidy Up campaign.
So much rubbish was collected the council had to make two trips to collect it all!
Mr Parr said: “It was fantastic that so many residents turned out on a chilly morning and that local retailers supported our event, giving added motivation to the team.
“The more people that turn up to these events, the faster we can remove the historic litter.
“Having teams from Keep Britain Tidy, St Philips Church and the Cheshire Probation Service also demonstrates that a diverse range of groups and organisations are willing and enthusiastic to help with our campaign”
At the group’s next event, on March 9, they intend to combine a clean-up with a Love Where You Live snowdrop bulb planting session.
It will be held at the recently-restored site of Barrow Old Hall, adjacent to Gt Sankey leisure centre.
