AN innovative scheme to recycle Christmas trees has raised over £6000 for Warrington’s St Rocco’s Hospice.
Staff from the hospice, in conjunction with volunteers from WBC recycling and waste management service, were out in force on Sunday, January, 6 calling on households to collect Christmas trees after the festive season.
The Hospice raised funds by asking for a donation- however small, for the tree to be collected. On the day, volunteers collected over 500 trees, which were taken to the WBC
green waste recycling centre to be mulched and turned into compost- a great way to raise funds.
Cllr David Keane, executive board member for environment and public protection at Warrington Borough Council, said: “The Christmas tree collection is a great idea to raise valuable funds for St Rocco’s Hospice and we’re delighted to be supporting it.”
Nigel Deardon, Waste and Recycling supervisor for WBC said “ It was a great scheme to be part of. The volunteer crews from WBC were fantastic; they were out on the road with the hospice volunteers from 7am and really helped to make a difference to the collection service. We are delighted to support such a worthy cause”
