Frozen ponds warning

FIREFIGHTERS at Warrington are urging local people to stay clear of frozen ponds, canals and rivers.
Frozen waterways may look enticing but the reality is that they pose a real threat to the safety of anyone who ventures onto them – and the firefighters who subsequently have to attempt a rescue.
Service delivery manager for Warrington, Alex Waller, said: “Venturing onto frozen ponds, lakes and rivers is extremely dangerous.
“The ice may look sturdy but you can never be sure of its thickness and how much weight it can support.
“Please don’t put yourself or others at risk. Stay off the ice. I would also encourage parents to warn their children about the dangers and to ensure that pets are kept on leads to avoid them from getting into difficulties.”
