WARRINGTON Borough Council has won a national “Green Apple” award for its innovative environmental work.
The council’s Waste Minimisation and Recycling Team were awarded Top National Local Authority – Green Champion Award 2012 for Environmental Best Practice, at a House of Commons ceremony.
The team were named winners after competing against more than 500 other nominations including companies, councils and communities.
It was awarded for the education work the team has done during the past 18 months. The aim was to visit as many people as possible, especially in hard to reach areas of the borough, and educate them on the issue of waste and recycling.
The project was a massive success with some areas, for example Dallam, seeing a 65 per cent increase in recycling.
As a result of this success the team will have their winning paper published in The Green Book, the leading international work of reference on environmental best practice. They will also be considered to represent the country in the European Business Awards for the Environment.
Cllr David Keane, executive member for environment and public protection, said: “We are immensely proud of the team and the success they have achieved. The increase in recycling rates is fantastic and has proved what a great job they’ve been doing with communities and engaging with residents.”
