Loss of gas supply update

0

THE National Grid is asking people without gas in the Latchford area of Warrington to wait in their homes for an engineer to call as the operation to restore gas supplies continues after a pipe was damaged during flood defence works taking plcae on Knutsford Road.
As part of the restoration process gas supplies at affected properties need to be switched off by an engineer. This has now been done at the vast majority of properties but access still needs to be gained to remaining properties to complete this operation.
People are reminded that they should ask to see the official identification – which all National Grid engineers carry – before allowing them into their homes. For more advice on this and to verify the identity of an engineer call 0845 835 1111.
The incident is affecting homes and businesses in the Knutsford Road area of Latchford. Supplies were lost after a contractor working on a flood defence scheme on the River Mersey damaged a kiosk containing equipment which controls gas pressures. An 8in diameter low pressure gas pipe was severed.
Replacement parts have been assembled and fitting and reconnection work to the pipe now needs completing.
To restore supplies engineers also need to visit all the properties affected twice. Once to safely turn off the gas supply at the meter and then again to turn the gas back on once the damage to the main has been repaired.
Fan heaters and hotplates will be made available to vulnerable residents. An incident room has been set up at St James’s Primary School in Old Road, WA4 1AP.
Residents should only use suitable appliances for heating and should not consider using naked flames, such as candles. Electrical appliances that have not been used for some time should not be used.
To help ensure that the electricity network is not overloaded we are asking residents to limit the number of electrical appliances they use. Rather than use multiple heaters, please consider wearing additional layers of clothing.
