Food wanted for Foodbank

A new initiative aimed at helping people in food poverty is to be launched in Warrington town centre by volunteers from churches, charities and other community groups.
Warrington foodbank will be the latest of nearly 100 foodbanks operating throughout Great Britain, with many more expected to follow. It will be a franchise of the Trussell Trust, an established Christian-based organisation which has now been in operation for over ten years.
Foodbanks collect non-perishable foods donated by churches, schools and businesses. These are then made up into packages, each containing a balanced diet of meals for three days for an individual or a family.
Warrington foodbank is now gathering food in readiness for its launch in December.
In the meantime, an Open Day to explain its workings will be held tomorrow, Thursday, (September 6th), from 12 noon to 2pm. and 6-8pm at Friars Green Church, Cairo Street. Potential volunteers and those wishing to be involved in giving will be especially welcome at this event, which will include an exhibition and presentation on the working of a foodbank.
Warrington Foodbank’s Co-ordinator, John Dolan, said: “The need for a foodbank has never been greater. Parents are going without food, sometimes for days at a time, just to feed their children. This can be due to benefit delay, debt problems or sudden sickness of a self-employed breadwinner. Our hope is that a foodbank in Warrington will give people immediate help when a crisis occurs.”
People wishing to donate food or wanting to know more about the foodbank project may get in touch through [email protected] or take food to the foodbank’s warehouse at the YMCA Furniture Store in Time Square between 9.a.m. and 3.p.m. Monday to Friday.
