FAMILY doctors in Warrington look set to be among the first in the country to be handed more power in the move towards a modernised National Health Service.
The Warrington Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) – representing 28 GP practices across the borough – is one of 35 to begin the process of authorisation.
There are more than 200 emerging CCGs in England and authorisation will take place in four waves between July and January next year.
Warrington could be in the first wave.
This first step towards authorisation is the latest stage in the Government’s controversial plan to make the NHS world-class by focussing on quality and giving frontline clinicians greater freedom and a strong leadership role.
Dr Andrew Davies, chairman of Warrington Clinical Commissioning Group (pictured) said:
“This is fantastic news for Warrington. Clinical leadership working with local patients has been central to the NHS modernisation plans and has given us a real opportunity to design services that will deliver better quality and stronger results for people in Warrington.
“We still have lots of work to do, but already our patients are seeing the benefits of a local NHS that is fully equipped to meet the challenges of rising demand and increasing costs of treatment”.
Dr Sarah Baker, accountable officer said: “We welcome this announcement by the National Commissioning Board and look forward to the challenge of preparing for full authorisation”.
