POLICE at Warrington are hunting a heartless thief who stole an elderly woman’s purse.
The woman, aged 82, had been shopping in Stockton Heath and was walking along Dundonald Avenue when the thief struck.
He took her purse, which contained cash and bank cards, from her handbag.
The incident was on Thursday, May 4 at about 3.30pm. The woman reported the theft to police as soon as she got home.
Police say the offender was a man in his 50s. He walked off towards Kimberley Drive, towards Stockton Heath.
PC Richard Whitehead, of Warrington South Neighbourhood Policing Unit, said: “We are appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident or knows the identity of the offender to get in touch.
“We are also urging anyone who was in the area around the time of the incident and might have seen anyone acting suspiciously to contact us.
“We would urge all residents to remain alert and to be aware of their surroundings – keep a close eye on your handbag, purse or wallet at all times.
“Many people do not realise just how quickly a thief can steal a purse or wallet without anyone even realising it has gone missing.
“We take any reports of these sorts of incidents extremely seriously and we want to reassure members of the public that we will continue to take positive action against anyone who is found to be responsible for this type of crime.”
Anyone with any information is urged to call Cheshire Police on 101 and information can also be left anonymously, via Crimestoppers, on 0800 555 111.
