Appeal after multiple car crash

An 81-year-old man suffered serious chest injuries following a multiple car crash involving four vehicles on Cromwell Avenue, Warrington.
Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident which happened just before midday on Sunday April 15, on the A574 Cromwell Avenue, near to its junction with Winwick Quay.
The collision involved four cars, a black Ford Fiesta, driven by the 81-year-old man from the Leigh area, a silver Meredes E200, driven by a 77-year-old man from the Northwich area, a black Peugeot 306, driven by a 29-year-old man from the Warrington area, and a silver Ford C-Max, driven by a 35-year-old woman from Barrow-in-Furness.
The Fiesta was travelling in the direction of Ikea from the A49 Winwick Road when it crossed over into the oncoming lane and collided with the silver Mercedes. The Fiesta then collided with the Peugeot and then the Ford C-Max.
The 81-year-old man was taken to Warrington General Hospital for treatment for serious chest injuries. The passenger in the car, a woman also from the Leigh area was also taken to hospital with minor chest injuries.
The other drivers were not injured.
Anyone who witnessed the collision or the circumstances leading up to it is asked to call police on 101 quoting incident number 414 of 15 April.
