Volunteers needed for ancient festival

VILLAGERS at Appleton Thorn are calling for help to run this year’s traditional ‘Bawming the Thorn’ event which dates back to medieval times and the days of the crusades.
Taking place on Saturday, June 16, this summer festival involves a procession around the village, followed by the ‘Bawming’ ceremony, in which local school children sing and dance around the specially decorated Thorn tree, in the centre of the village. A fete then takes place on the Village Hall field, with traditional stalls for all the
family and home made teas.
Bawming Committee Chairwoman Nora Carlin said: “Due to some long-service key team members leaving the area, the Bawming Committee needs extra help to stage and run the event, including moving and erecting gazebos and putting out stall contents. Anyone who is keen to get involved will be welcomed with open arms as the event is run entirely by volunteers. Any support, however small, will be gratefully received.”
Any one who can help please email [email protected] or contact Lisa Baker on 07870 695 177.
