Two arrested as police swoop on off-licences

A SWOOP on off-licences at Warrington resulted in two people being arrested for suspected immigration offences, drugs paraphernalia being seized and a box of illegal whiskey being found.
Nine premises were checked in a joint operation by police, Trading Standards and the UK Border Agency – and all failed checks relating to conditions of their licences.
Enquiries are continuing, with the issues being followed up by Trading Standards and the UK Border Agency.
Inspector Andy Ross said: “The operation was carried out in response to concerns raised by local people about issues at off-licences in the area.
“Regular checks are carried out at licensed premises across the town to ensure that they are adhering to the conditions of their licence. Action will be taken against any premises found to be in breach of their licence.
“Licensing laws exist to ensure that shops that sell alcohol do so responsibly and Cheshire Police, together with our partners, will continue to monitor premises across the town.
“We would urge local residents to continue to be vigilant and to report any issues or concerns in relation to licensed premises to us immediately.”
Pete Astley (pictured), the borough council’s head of Public Protection services, food standards and hygiene said: “We have made great progress over the years in reducing the availability of alcohol to young people through off-licences, supermarkets and shops, but Public Protection and partners will continue to remain extremely vigilant; monitoring our licensed premises very closely, targeting any premises that give us cause for concern and taking action where appropriate.”
Anyone with any information is urged to call Cheshire Police on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
