Vascular services come under scrutiny

THE controversial proposals to move some vascular services from Warrington Hospital to Chester will come under scrutiny at a consultation event in the town on Friday.
The meeting will be at The Halliwell Jones Stadium, Platinum Room, Winwick Road, from 10am to 2pm.
It will be one of a series of consultation events across Cheshire and Merseyside as part of the public consultation on vascular services.
The proposals aim to save more lives and improve the quality of life for patients after their treatment.
But they have caused a storm of protest at Warrington, with local MPs, councillors and some doctors criticising the proposals.
Currently, a number of local hospitals carry out vascular surgery, but the most complex surgery – about 20 per cent of the current procedures – should be carried out in specialist units to ensure that surgeons are able to develop the highest skills. This means that specialist surgery should be concentrated to fewer centres – something widely agreed on among the clinicians across the region.
The Clinical Commissioning Groups, made up of GPs who commission services for their patients, have recommended that there should be two specialist arterial centres for Cheshire and Merseyside.
It is proposed that one is at the Countess of Chester Hospital, working with hospitals south of the Mersey and one at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, working with hospitals north of the Mersey.
The consultation events are designed to ensure everyone has a chance to give their views and any comments received will be recorded and taken into consideration.
The consultation document, frequently asked questions and details of events in Cheshire and Merseyside can be found on a dedicated website at www.vascularconsultation.org.uk
