Warning after burglaries jump 208%

RESIDENTS in Warrington are being urged to be on their guard following a spate of burglaries in the south of the borough.
A worrying increase of 208 per cent for burglaries in South Warrington was recorded last month – although police stress that the number of break-ins in the area is still very low.
But police are reminding residents to remain security conscious.
Some of the properties targeted have been homes that have been left in darkness while people are still out at work when the night draws in.
Police are urging residents to make their homes look “lived in” to reduce the chances of being targeted.
Security measures recommended include timer switches for lights, radios, etc, keeping doors and windows closed and locked, ensuring valuable items cannot be seen from outside the house and fitting garages and sheds with strong padlocks and, if possible, alarms.
Exterior lighting that comes on when it gets dark, motion detectors, using gravel on paths and planting prickly bushes in vulnerable places should also be considered.
Being a good neighbour is also important. People should report anything suspicious in the area.
Police have stepped up in hot spots and leaflets with valuable crime reduction advice are being distributed.
Inspector Sarah Heath, of Warrington South Neighbourhood Policing Unit, said: “Many burglars are attracted to homes that have been left in darkness. We are urging residents to take a few simple steps to ensure their home is secure, especially if they are going to be late home from work or out for the night.”
