The attack was in South Avenue, Orford, at around 6.30am this morning. The victim was a 60-year-old man.
Police said the victim was walking in the direction of Orford Lane when a car drove passed to stop a short distance ahead of him.
A man got out of the vehicle and walked down West Avenue while the car continued further along South Avenue and stopped not far from Hale Street.
As the victim passed the junction of West Avenue he heard footsteps running behind him.
He saw the man who had got out of the car running towards him and was then struck on the left side of his head with an unknown object.
The offender then fled the scene, getting back into the vehicle, which then drove off towards Orford Lane, leaving the victim with two parallel cuts to his head.
He was taken to Warrington Hospital where he was treated for his injuries and was later said to be in a stable condition.
