The 50-year-old woman suffered bruising in the struggle in Froghall Lane but did not require hospital treatment.
Later 23-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident but was later released pending further enquiries.
Police are seeking a young couple who stopped and talked to the victim after the incident as they feel they could have vital information.
The robbery was around 9pm on Saturday night. The woman was walking along Froghall Lane when she was grabbed from behind by a man who tried to grab her handbag.
There was a struggle and the woman managed to keep hold of her handbag. A passing motorist stopped and came to her assistance but the offender managed to snatch her mobile ‘phone and fled down Paul Street.
DC Nat Lewis said: “We are appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident to get in touch with us. We believe that a young man and woman stopped and talked to the victim and stayed with her until officers arrived at the scene.
“We are keen to speak to the pair and would urge them to come forward and help us with our enquiries. We have already traced the driver who stopped at the scene to assist.”
Anyone who witnessed the incident or knows the identity of the offender is urged to call Cheshire Police on 101. Information can also be left anonymously, via Crimestoppers, on 0800 555 111.
