Ian Appleton, 62, (pictured) was reported missing from his home in Marsh House Lane, Warrington by worried members of his family on Wednesday morning. He was last seen at 11.15pm on Tuesday.
Police started an extensive search because it was considered unusual for Mr Appleton to disappear without explanation.
A body was discovered near the railway off Gorsey Lane, Warrington and was later formally identified as Mr Applton.
Police say the death is not being treated as suspicious.
A post mortem examination will be carried out later today and a file will be prepared for the Cheshire coroner.
