A WOMAN who falsely claimed more than £2,500 benefit while she was working as a self-employed person has been ordered to repay the money.
Amanda Roberts, 40, of Old Liverpool Road, Warrington, pleaded guilty at the town’s magistrates court to failing to notify the borough council she was self employed during the period August 2009 to May 2010.
The court was told she was overpaid Income Support of £987, Housing Benefit of £1,187 and Council Tax Benefit of £337.
She was also given a conditional discharge for 24 months and ordered to pay £200 costs.
After the hearing, Adrian Webster, the council’s benefits manager, said: “Every day in the UK over 200 benefit thieves are caught – the clear message is – if you commit benefit fraud you will be caught.”
