POLICE are hunting an armed gang who robbed security oficers stocking a cash machine in Warrington before escaping with a “significant” amount of money.
Detectives are investigating the robbery that took place on Tuesday evening at about 9.40pm at the Texaco garage, Manchester Road, Woolston.
The security officers were stocking the machine when they were approached by the men who were armed with weapons including a sledge hammer and a pick axe. The security officers were forced back into the store.
The men stole cash cartridges containing money, before fleeing the scene in a red Vauxhall Astra which was later found burnt out in Longbarn Lane.
Enquiries so far suggest the car was stolen during a burglary in Warrington in August.
Detectives are carrying out house to house enquiries at local homes and businesses near to the scene. Anyone who witnessed the incident, or saw a car fleeing the scene, should contact DS Gordon Wilson at Warrington CID on 0845 458 0000 quoting incident 1002 of September 6.
