WARRINGTON’S big TJ Hughes store has closed for the last time.
The last shoppers thronged into the Sankey Street store yesterday (Friday) in search of bargains.
But the shelves had largely been cleared by then.
The closure, more than 10 years after TJ Hughes opened in Warrington, means that one of the town’s biggest and most prominent stores will lie empty.
The former Co-operative store could be empty for some time, although a number of firms are said to be interested.
Almost 40 members of staff will lose their jobs next week.

Anyone know why it has closed?
Company gone into administration and closing most of stores down – similar problem to what happened to Woolies.
Shame it’s closed as you could get some good things from there and at very affordable prices. There’s no other shops like that in Warringtton anymore which sell such a wide range of things all under one roof. I wonder what it will become ? Hope it’s not another pound shop or a bar/nightclub. Good luck to the staff and I hope they find new jobs soon.
Sad day! Could WBC have helped? Other businesses have been offered Business Rate Relief to help save jobs.
