The benefits of watching less TV

FAMILIES eating meals together and children watching less TV are just two of the benefits of a healthy lifestyle programme running in Warrington.
Positive changes in children’s eating habits and behaviour have been reported following a recent family lifestyles programme run as part of Warrington’s healthy weight strategy.
It is co-ordinated by the borough council and commissioned by NHS Warrington and has four principles – Mind, Exercise, Nutrition, Do it (MEND).
Families are helped to overcome issues such as fussy eating and are offered techniques for increasing the amount of physical activity they do together.
Sessions include workshops on helping children to try new foods, fun physical activities for children and parent workshops covering topics such as food labelling and food habits and behaviours.
Parents have made comments such as “It has had a big impact on us and opened our eyes” and “labels about salt fat and sugar are an epiphany.”
Many have reported changes such as children trying new healthy foods, children becoming more active and watching less TV and parents making healthier packed lunches for their children.
Cllr Kate Hannon, the council’s executive member for leisure, community and culture, said: “This is a fantastic initiative that is really making a difference to the health and wellbeing of local children and their families.
“I wish the programme continued success in its work in the coming months and encourage any families who are interested to get involved.”
The free programme is aimed at children aged five to seven and is free to attend. Further details are available from Norah Mulligan on 01925 406070.
