A WARRINGTON man with an innovative idea for a new business is through to the second round of a national competition to find the market traders of the future.
Jonathan Hutchinson, from Stockton Heath is one of 70 potential winners in the “First Pitch” competition organised by the National Market Traders Federation.
Hundreds of people entered the contest when it was launched earlier this year and the winner will receive £2,000 towards business start-up costs and concessionary rent at the market of his or her choice.
The borough council is backing the initiative and Jonathan will have a chance to find out what customers think of his idea when he sets up stall at Warrington Market on Saturday, July 2.
His “Upstyle” stall will showcase products produced from unwanted and abandoned everyday items.
Jonathan said: “Upstyle goes against the concept of mass produced, imported furniture by looking for alternative uses in everyday items.
“Our business concept is about upcycling – taking unwanted or redundant items and giving them a new lease of life as a focal point in the modern home.
“We look at mixing the old with the new, reviving dated pieces and recycling discarded materials that may have otherwise ended up in landfill. The sourcing of our materials is sustainable while the design of our products is innovative. As a business we are creating eco-chic.”
Cllr Mike Hannon, deputy leader of the borough council and town centre spokesperson said: “Markets are a great, cost effective way for fledgling businesses to get a presence in town and city centres. I wish Jonathan the very best of luck with the competition and hope he will get lots of support and feedback from residents and visitors to the market.”
Jonathan will be assessed by the NMTF on the results of his test trading on the market.
His stall will be open from 9am-5pm on Saturday, July 2.
