Johann checks in for England

A TEN-years-old boy from Lymm has been chosen for the England Chess Team after a series of high-quality matches.
Johann Power won the place, in the England Under 11 chess squad, at a competition in Liverpool, and is now among the top 10 players in his age group in the country.
He will play for England against a “Rest Of The World” team in London on June 11.
His mum Sabine Power said: “I knew Johann could make it into the England Squad if he applied himself although I thought it would be a close thing.
“In the event, Johann qualified comfortably, achieving one of the highest scores in the trials against the top 50 players in the UK. Out of six games Johann’s record was three wins, two draws and one lost scoring 4-6.”
Johann, a pupil of Oughtrington Primary School, learned how to play chess just three years ago after discovering an old chess set on holiday. His interest developed when he attended Grappenhall Chess Club.
Sabine said: “Just four months after joining the club he came second in the U10 Cheshire and North Wales Chess Final. He has gone on to became the top rated player in the county for his age section and has recently been made captain of the Cheshire and North Wales U11 team.”
Since then he has achieved success at both adult and junior competitions throughout the country.
