THE Cheshire Women’s Cricket League opened its season with champions Appleton taking on a Cheshire Select side – and winning by 17 runs.
Appleton batted first at Lyons Lane against a Cheshire side including six played with senior county experience.
The Appleton openers put on 44 before Emma Barlow was dismissed for 30.
Cheshire’s spin bowlers Lorna Thomas and Abbey Gore bowled well in tandem, but 41 from Natalie Lyons kept Appleton’s momentum going and they eventually reached 129.
Appleton’s new ball pair of Nathalie Long and Anni Rashid opened with a miserly spell that restricted Cheshire to 9-2 off ll overs.
Lyons completed a fine all-round performance with 2-10 and Chloe Page took 2-7 to have Cheshire reeling on 41-6.
The Select side fought back, bringing the required rate down to close to four an over, but more quick wickets and maiden overs at the death sealed the game for Appleton, Cheshire finishing on 112-9.
The match was played as a 13-a-side contest with only 11 allowed to bat and only 11 fielders at any one time.
