A WARRINGTON leisure centre will receive a makeover thanks to a £56,000 grant from the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA).
Birchwood Leisure and Tennis Complex, Benson Road, won the bid to revamp its tennis courts.
The money will go towards replacing the surfaces of the indoor and outdoor courts with hard court acrylic.
Once complete, the refurbishments will mean the complex will be able to work towards becoming a High Performance Centre for tennis – one of only a small number in the North West.
The status is given to centres which consistently offer a high quality development programme for young, upcoming players and provides high-level coaching and fitness programmes and access to top facilities.
Cllr Bob Timmis, the borough council’s executive member for leisure and skills, said: “This generous funding from the LTA is fantastic news for tennis enthusiasts of all ages but particularly young people aspiring to become professional players.
“We are proud that the improvements to the tennis courts will mean the complex can enhance and develop its programme and work hard towards securing High Performance Centre status from the LTA.”
The funding is part of the LTA’s aim to get all young players across the country playing on the same kind of hard court surface to develop consistency in the way tennis players are trained.
