SPORTS clubs in Warrington will benefit from a £15,000 grant to set up a new health initiative.
The borough council’s Arts and Sports Engagement Team (ASET) and partners are one of 17 pilot projects to have won funding from the Change 4 Life Community Fund to set up a new initiative.
The successful bid was made in partnership with Cheshire and Merseyside Partnerships for Health, Cheshire and Warrington Sports Partnerships and Merseyside Sport.
The team has been awarded £15,000 to work with local sports clubs to promote healthy lifestyles in the local community. The aim is to train sports clubs to achieve one of three levels of health grading – bronze, silver or gold.
The scheme is part of the Change 4 Life Charter Club Award which aims to promote healthy lifestyles by improving communication between clubs, sports development teams and local health services.
Councillor Bob Timmis, (right) the council’s executive member for leisure and skills, said: “It is fantastic news for Warrington that the team has been awarded funding from the Change 4 Life Community Fund to pursue this initiative. We are delighted to have been selected as one of the 17 pilot projects from the 98 national applications submitted.
“This project will provide a great opportunity to improve the health and wellbeing of Warrington residents and to build coaching capacity and skills in our local sports clubs ahead of the Olympics next year.”
ASET is also supporting a new 5k event at Victoria Park on June 12 from 10am organised by social enterprise Active Synergy. Local residents are being called on to walk, jog or run to raise money for their local charity or sports club. To enter go to www.legacyevent.org
