Motorists may be spared fuel cost rise

COUNCIL leaders at Warrington have received a letter from the Treasury which gives hope that motorists will be spared a 1p rise in fuel duty planned for April.
Council leader Ian Marks and his deputy, Keith Bland, wrote to Chancellor George Osborne last month asking for the rise in duty, originally planned by the last Labour government, to be scrapped.
They have received a reply which states: “Although Ministers cannot pre-empt the Budget, they do wish to reassure you that they are looking seriously at what they can do in this area…..Ministers are considering what the Government can do to mitigate the worst impacts of these rises on motorists.”
In a joint statement, Cllrs Marks and Bland said: “We really hope the Chancellor will listen to what people are saying. Private motorists and businesses in Warrington would welcome the extra duty not being imposed.”
In their original letter, the two leaders said they understood the importance of reducing the deficit left by the previous government.
But they noted that fuel prices had already increased significantly because of upward movements in the price of oil and the increase in VAT.
Scrapping the planned increase in duty would be greatly welcomed by private motorists and businesses in Warrington.

  1. Well, for them to get a reply regarding the proposed immense saving on a planned 1 whole pence rise in fuel duty, they must be incredibly important. Or are they really that detached from society, or even that far up their own rectum that they “think” they will make a difference.

  2. Hang on – we moan about Fuel Prices so Cllr Marks and the Lib Dems do something to try and change government ways – a way which was a Labour policy and yet we still moan??

I am glad that the Lib Dems have taken this action of a letter being sent because at least they can make the government listen as they are the same party. Gordon Brown and Darling just acted like Dick Turpin on us all – rememember the 10p Tax Rate???? They have done something for us all. Well done again

  3. Pay My Way. You jest. The ONLY reason that this rise may not occur is the discontent from the WHOLE of the country who have been battered by the repercussions from what Labour did.

WBC thought it would be good propaganda for the gullible voters like yourself.

IF they were that good they would be taking a pay-cut and saving some jobs and services.
