Wizards sink Royal Navy!

WARRINGTON Wizards recorded a magnificent 28-20 victory over the Royal Navy in a high quality encounter in the Carnegie Challenge Cup 2nd Round at Wilderspool Stadium.
With the Carnegie Challenge Cup Trophy on display both sides gave their all in an end-to-end encounter that had the large crowd of over 300 engrossed for the full duration and it wasn’t until four minutes from the end of normal time that the outcome was effectively decided.
The Wizards led 16-10 at the break and after increasing the lead early in the second half the Royal Navy fought back to within two points at 22-20 but a Mike Stout try and monster touchline conversion from Nick Owen with four minutes of normal time remaining settled the matter in the wizards favour.
The try scorers for the Wizards were: Dave Yii 1, Matt Taylor 1, Paul Alcock 1, Graham Healey 1 and Mike Stout 1. Warren Ayres 2 and Nick Owen 2 added the conversions.
After the game Head Coach Chris Campbell said, “We are absolutely thrilled to have got the victory over a very talented Royal Navy side. That was one of the hardest games that we have played and the Navy deserve an enormous amount of credit for the way they played.
“We really had to dig deep especially in the last quarter but the team spirit and determination to succeed pulled us through and we cannot wait for the next round and a game against a professional side for the second year running. I am proud of the effort that every single one of the lads put in and we can now work in training on polishing up one or two areas so that we can give a good account of ourselves and hopefully pull off a shock.”
