MP's hope for faster broadband

NEW rules that could mean faster broadband services in parts of Warrington have been welcomed by a local MP.
Warrington North MP Helen Jones said that media regulator Ofcom has made proposals that would see more competition between service providers, which could result in cheaper prices and faster service.
She said: “I have been fighting for a long time to improve broadband services for areas of Warrington North such as Winwick. Residents have contacted me about the slow speeds that they receive in this area.”
She said the proposals would increase provider competition, which could improve the service and reduce costs.
“Ofcom’s proposals are out to consultation now and I hope that they are introduced soon so that residents start to see an improvement in their broadband connections,” she said.
The MP said that Winwick has been identified as a Market 1 area by Ofcom, which means that BT is currently the only provider. Ofcom’s proposals would reduce the cost to other service providers to purchase wholesale broadband access from BT and enable them to compete with BT.
