A NEW fully equipped boxing gym has been officially opened at Warrington Fire Station for use by the community.
The gym, on Winwick Road, will also be the new home of the Phoenix Amateur Boxing Club which faced uncertainty as its former premises is due to be closed next year.
Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service obtained funding for the project from the North West Improvement and Efficiency Partnership to enhance its youth engagement programme.
Chief Fire Officer Paul Hancock said: “This is a really exciting project and one we are delighted to be a part of.
“We are proud of the part we play our local communities, especially the impact we have on the hundreds of young people that benefit from our various projects each year. I have no doubt that this fantastic new facility will provide a real boost to all that use it.”
The gym will be also be used during the service’s initiatives for young people including Fire Cadet, Princes Trust and Respect programmes.
Brian Birtwistle, from Phoenix, said: “I would just like to extend my thanks to Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service because without their commitment the Phoenix Club could not have survived and yet now, thanks to this great new facility it can move from strength to strength in its work in helping to promote positive behaviour and ambition in our young people.”
The gym will aim to reduce anti-social behaviour and improve fitness levels and health among young people.
