FORMER North West Development Agency Chief Executive Steven Broomhead has been appointed Professor of Entrepreneurial Education at Liverpool Hope University.
Professor Broomhead, who spent seven and a half years in his key post with the NWDA, will also take responsibility for institutional development.
“I am looking forward with great enthusiasm to this new direction in my career,’’ he said. “I welcome the opportunity to work with a very distinctive and very successful University that is in many ways unique.”
The new appointment, with its wide-ranging brief, is possibly the first of its kind in Britain. Professor Broomhead will bring to the University his long experience in the worlds of both business development and education.
Professor Broomhead will play a senior role in the development of the university in a period of rapid and significant change within the higher education sector in England. He suggests that, because of its nimble nature and strong academic profile, Liverpool Hope will meet the new challenges successfully.
“I will be helping to position the University for the new higher education open market while maintaining its distinctive mission and values,’’ he said. “I’ll also be helping establish Liverpool Hope as a centre of excellence for entrepreneurial education and of support for small and medium enterprises.”
Professor Broomhead was Chief Executive of the NWDA from April 2003 until he resigned in October 2010. Before that, he was for five and a half years Chief Executive of Warrington Borough Council. From 1986-90, he was Vice-Principal of Skelmersdale College in Lancashire and then moved to Co Durham to be Principal of a tertiary college in Easington from 1990-94. In 1994 he returned to the North West to take up post as Principal of Warrington Collegiate, which later became University College Warrington where 1,200 students studied at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He has been a governor of Liverpool John Moores University and is now a governor of the University of Central Lancashire. He is also non-executive chairman of Warrington Wolves Rugby Super League Football Club.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Gerald J Pillay said “Liverpool Hope University welcomes Professor Broomhead’s appointment to a senior role. He brings extraordinary gifts and experience to the University to bolster its ambitious educational and development plans. Steven Broomhead brings together a real understanding of economic development and a firm commitment to top quality education.”
Monsignor John Devine, Chair of the University Council said “Steven Broomhead brings a unique blend of experience to this post in Higher Education, and has deep understanding of both the Public and the Private sectors. As Universities face difficult challenges ahead Liverpool Hope University is delighted to have Steven Broomhead on board.”
