HEALTH chiefs at Warrington are warning people across the borough to prepare for freezing temperatures over the weekend.
The Met Office forecast outbreaks of rain, sleet and hill snow coming in from the west overnight and falling onto sub-zero surfaces.
This will lead to widespread icy stretches forming on untreated surfaces.
NHS Warrington is reminding people of the steps they should take to make sure they stay safe and well.
Dr Rita Robertson, director of public health for Warrington said: “The persistent freezing weather which we are seeing continues to present a health risk, particularly to older people and those with underlying medical conditions. It is very important for people to look after themselves and others around them, and to take sensible steps to reduce the risk of injury or illness.”
To keep warm and well during periods of cold weather:
* Keep curtains drawn and doors closed to block out draughts.
* Have regular hot drinks and at least one hot meal a day if possible. Eating regularly helps keep energy levels up during winter.
* Wear several light layers of warm clothes (rather than one chunky layer).
* Keep as active as possible.
* Wrap up warm if you need to go outside on cold days.
Keep main living rooms at around 18- 21°C (64-70°F), and the rest of the house at least 16°C (61°F).
People who cannot heat all the rooms you use should heat the living room during the day and the bedroom just before you go to sleep.
Residents are asked to check up on friends, relatives and neighbours – particularly the elderly – who may be more vulnerable to cold weather.
People with heart or breathing problems may have worse symptoms during a cold spell and for several days after temperatures return to normal.
Young people should also be careful if heading out in the evening as temperatures continue to drop even further overnight.
