Historic housing hand-over

THE historic transfer of all Warrington’s council houses to Golden Gates Housing Trust takes place today (Monday).
Borough council chief executive Diana Terris will sign the agreement with the Golden Gates chief executive Peter Mercer at the Town Hall.
Warrington Borough Council is the first council to complete this move after tenants voted overwhelmingly in favour of Golden Gates Housing becoming a not for profit registered provider of social housing – and their new landlord – earlier this year.
Some 8,700 homes will be involved in the hand-over, occupied by more than 23,000 people.
The transfer will mean Golden Gates will receive £105,000 to improve housing over the next five years and half a billion pounds over the next 30 years.
A ballot of tenants resulted in a 67 per cent turn-out – far higher than for local or general elections – with a massive 97 per cent of tenants voting in favour of the transfer.
