School wins top national award

A WARRINGTON high school has won a national award from the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust (SSAT) for outstanding achievement in sustainable engineering and manufacturing.
Specialist engineering college Great Sankey High School has won the Rolls-Royce Award in recognitions of its achievement in sustainable engineering and manufacturing including innovative teaching methods, extra-curricular activities and examination results.
Nicola Swaney, education manager at Rolls-Royce presented the award at the SSAT’s national conference in Birmingham.
Some 2,000 teachers from 1,000 schools from 10 countries around the world attended the conference.
Students at Great Sankey have many opportunities for success in an exciting and well tailored curriculum because the school’s specialism continually brings new opportunities and dimensions which extend and enhance provision, according to Ofsted, in a report in May. The school has an “outstanding” Ofsted grade.

Judge Denise Joseph, the National Network Co-ordinator for Technology at the SSAT, said: “Their partnerships are vital bringing a ‘real world’ dimension for learners.
Large engineering companies like Morgan Sindall, Jaguar and Wates Construction support their Engineering Diploma. The thriving Young Apprentice programme is also supported by the flagship Automotive Skills centre, a superb facility with cutting edge technology, built in partnership with the RAC.
Suzanne Harrison, director of engineering at the school, said: “We are very proud to have won an award for engineering from such a prestigious company renowned for its quality and history. It celebrates the achievements of both staff and pupils and the way in which engineering permeates through every subject area in our school.”
