A NEW group has formed in Warrington aimed at improving a local cemetery.
Members of Great Sankey Parish Council, together with residents from the parish and Penketh met at St Mary’s Church, Great Sankey, to discuss the church’s cemetery.
They formed a new group, Friends of St Mary’s Cemetery, aimed at restoring respect and the appearance of the facility.
Chairman Coun Trudi Wood has previously fronted a working group that instigated many projects in the cemetery including pruning trees, cutting back shrubs, erecting a fence, fixing headstones and clearing the raised bed.
She said: “I am very grateful to Bereavement Services at Warrington Borough Council for all their support on these projects, but there is still a lot of work that needs to be done.
“A friends group is the best way to achieve that and we are very lucky indeed to have such a lot of willing and enthusiastic volunteers who have joined us. We have a long list of projects I am really looking forward to getting to work on them.”
Deputy chairman Bob McLaughlin spoke on behalf of the bereaved of the parish.
He said: “After many years of neglect it is really comforting to find there are at last people out there that care for the appearance of St Mary’s Cemetery and have respect for both the bereaved and the people interred there.”
Anyone who like to get involved with the group should contact Trudi on 01925 790712 or email [email protected]
