Health chiefs issue flu jab warning

SOME vulnerable people in Warrington with mistaken fears about swine flu vaccine are putting their health at risk by refusing to have this year’s flu injection, according to health chiefs.
Despite assurances from health experts, some people still think that there are risks associated with this year’s flu vaccine, which includes a component to protect against H1N1 swine flu.
NHS Warrington is extremely concerned that some people may be risking serious illness, particularly those who are more susceptible to complications from flu. These include people who are over 65 and those with chest or heart conditions, kidney disease, diabetes and breathing problems.
Flu infections among these people can affect the heart, lungs and other organ systems in the body leading to hospitalisation.
In some cases the infections can be fatal. Many of these admissions could be avoided with a simple vaccination.
Dr Marioth Manche, deputy director of Public Health at Warrington Primary Care Trust said: “NHS Warrington is aware that some people have expressed concerns about the swine flu strain being part of this year’s seasonal flu vaccine.
“Last year some people worried that because the vaccine was new, it was insufficiently tested. Nothing could be further from the truth.
“We are also very anxious to re-assure patients that it is far from unusual to include more that one strain of flu in the vaccine. Each year the seasonal flu vaccine is made up of the virus strains circulating throughout the population and these strains can change from one year to the next.
“It’s essential that people protect their health and that of their loved ones by getting vaccinated. The flu vaccine has been around for many decades and has saved many lives. If people have any concerns, they should speak to their GP or practice nurse.”
This year for the first time, Warrington’s expectant mums will also be advised to protect themselves with a flu vaccination.
