YOUNG science stars were given a tour of the solar system during an awards day in Warrington.
Pupils from 13 local schools attended a prize-giving ceremony at the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) Daresbury Laboratory.
They were winners of the Schools Science Prizes awarded by the STFC in recognition of significant progress or outstanding achievements in the subject.
Pupils were nominated by their teacher and were presented with a certificate and book tokens by Professor Colin Whitehouse, head of Daresbury Laboratory.
During their visit they were given an insight into the life of a scientist, followed by a guided tour of the solar system illuminated with highlights from current research in Daresbury’s mobile planetarium.
Tony Buckley, head of communications and outreach, said: “STFC is delighted to support an event like the School Science Prize, which celebrates young people who have put in considerable effort or achieved highly in the lead up to studying for science at GCSE level.
“These youngsters are the scientists and engineers of tomorrow and we want to do all we can to nurture that interest and enthusiasm for science to ensure that they can achieve their very best.”
Warrington high schools taking part were Birchwood, Bridgewater, Cardinal Newman RC, Culcheth, Great Sankey, Lysander, Penketh, St Gregory’s RC, Sir Thomas Boteler CE, William Beamont and Woolston. Also taking part were Grappenhall Hall School and St Aelred’s RC Technology College, Newton-le-Willows.
